After acquiring responsibility, the student gradually develops skills in how to heal and forgive the self and to heal and forgive others through empathy, a spiritual quality innate to the soul. The doorway to empathy is understanding; that is, seeing from the other’s perspective. One needs to see with another’s eyes before they can feel with the other’s heart.
The shadow of empathy is judgement and a by-product of the material mind. The material mind mistakes love for the self as vanity and loathing for the self as humility. These distortions are projected onto others. The soul mind sees others as reflections of what it needs to learn most about itself.
